Rings FAQs
What is the difference between sterling silver
and 925 silver?
They are the same thing. 925 identifies the piece as containing 92.5%
by weight of silver. Sterling is a term that’s been used to describe
925 silver since the 13th century. Bali silver and German silver are
two examples of silver alloys that contain less than 92.5% silver, but
still make bright and beautiful pieces of jewelry.
Why does some silver react with skin – causing green
fingers?
Silver naturally turns black as it oxidizes with age and disuse. Silver
also reacts with skin because amino acids in skin accelerate the oxidization
process. If your finger turns green or black – don’t worry
about it harming you, it won’t. When the silver turns skin green,
the skin is simply reacting to the copper content of the silver. Hot
weather also accelerates oxidization and when the skin next to your
silver ring sweats and accelerates the oxidization even further.
What is the best way to keep silver jewelry looking shiny and
great?
There are several ways to care for silver jewelry. If your silver is
sterling the best tip is to keep it in a Ziploc bag or some other hermetically
sealed container when you’re not wearing it. Avoid contact with
chemicals – take your ring off when cleaning anything, even preparing
food (especially around eggs and mustard). Also take off your ring before
exercising – the sweat and heat is not good for jewelry of any
kind.
